Innovation in the APS: The Importance of Organisational Culture
Speaker: Mr Terry Moran AO, Secretary, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
Date: 26th August 2008| Location: Canberra
The Australian Institute of Management (AIM) is delighted to welcome Mr Terry Moran AO as a guest speaker in our popular AIM Briefing series.
Mr Moran was appointed to the position of Secretary, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in February 2008, a position that carries considerable influence as the top bureaucratic adviser to the Prime Minister and as the most senior of the 19 heads of Federal Government departments.
Mr Moran will speak about the importance of an organisational culture that values innovation, in relation to both corporate management and to policy development and delivery. For the public service, the preparedness to think and do things differently is critical in addressing the myriad challenges we face, be they economic like the sub-prime crisis or social, like addressing indigenous disadvantage. The APS must engage actively with these problems and provide quality public policy work which will lift the quality of decision making by governments. We therefore rely on APS leaders to look over the horizon to identify the opportunities and threats over the long term; construct practical options for action that are flexible and open to change; and to bring people along with them.
